Technology Assignment

One form of communication that will impact the professional world when fully developed is instantaneous translation. With the advanced computing technologies that the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has been researching, there has already been a major breakthrough with a system called MADCAT, which automatically classifies and translates documents. Currently DARPA is working on a system called Broad Operational Language Translation (BOLT). This new system will instantaneously translate foreign languages to English.

Of course, there are other companies trying to make new breakthroughs in translation. One of these companies is SpeechGear. SpeechGear’s Compadre System offers several components related to translation and speech. One component, called Interact, is on the peak of potentially making instant translation available. To use this feature, the user speaks the words he/she wants translated and the device has the ability to translate the words into the language you are requesting.

Though there are several programs available today used for translation, including Skype and Google Translate, there is still much to be figured out with translating verbal communication. Even harder than this is the ability to make it happen instantaneously. Though these programs require a large amount of development, it is interesting to think about where this new technology will take the professional world.

The biggest change this invention will bring to the professional world is the collapse of the language barrier. Without a language barrier, individuals will be able to negotiate, trade, and create partnerships much quicker than in the past. In the past, traveling abroad for business required a translator for meetings, and a pocket dictionary for looking up common phrases and words. In more recent developments, professionals have tools on smartphones to aid in translation, however this takes time to type, or say, words and phrases into smartphone. With this new technology, professionals would have the ability to travel with the ability to communicate with each individual as if they were speaking to them in a normal conversation. Of course, the biggest defining feature of this new technology is the instantaneous feature.

Along with collapsing language barriers, this new technology will accelerate the world’s growing interconnectedness and bring globalization to a new level. Though English is the lingua franca for business, this next wave of technology will remove the need for a shared language. This will open the door for non-elites and a massive number of non-English speakers.

Lastly, this new technology will also significantly reduce the social isolation of tens of millions around the world. There are currently robotic gloves with flex sensors that allow a deaf individual to “speak” in real time. These new technologies will allow so many to feel involved and represented in society. And overall, instantaneous translation will build a platform that opens the door to a wide range of possibilities. If these breakthroughs can bring new people into the discussion and further the act of globalization, the world as we know it will change entirely and create a broad marketplace of ideas that everyone can contribute to.

PEPPERIDGE FARMS PROVIDES MUCH-NEEDED SNACKS FOR THE FAMILY PLACE

The Family Place accepted a large donation in Pepperidge Farm products with gratitude via The Family Place social media accounts
LOGAN, UT— The Family Place is excited to announce the donation of 20 pounds of Pepperidge Farm products on November 25, 2016 to the new facility in North Logan. This donation will provide snacks to children in Cache and Rich County who visit The Family Place nursery.

“We cannot thank Pepperidge Farm enough for this generous donation,” said Executive Director Esterlee Molyneux. “As a private non-profit, we rely heavily on organizations in the community to keep our mission alive, and Pepperidge Farm has done just that.”

The Family Place nursery, known as The Kid’s Place, is a place for parents to take children in times of need and while attending parenting classes. The Kid’s Place also provides temporary shelter to children who are taken out of homes due to abuse and addiction of caregivers.

The Kid’s Place sees an average of 500 visits a month, and this donation from Pepperidge Farm will go a long way toward ensuring each child is well taken care of during their visit.

Proposal Letter

Executive Summary

The Family Place is a non-profit organization focused entirely on building stronger families and keeping children safe. As an organization, we are proposing an exchange of 20 pounds of nursery snacks from Pepperidge Farms for regular social media recognition on all TFP platforms. This exchange is extremely valuable for both parties involved because the social media recognition from a community-respected organization is something that cannot be bought, and snacks are something extremely valuable to The Family Place because of our goal to help each child to feel comfortable while staying in the nursery. The major outcome of this exchange is a lasting relationship between The Family Place and Pepperidge farms, creating a partnership within the Cache County community.

Organization Appeal
The Family Place is approaching Pepperidge Farms for help with donations of snacks because we know that helping out the community is a priority for your company. The Family Place is a nonprofit organization, so it survives on donations and help from others. Ultimately, you would be helping a great cause, and feeding quality snacks to young children who need them. As one of your newest marketing campaigns was titled, we know a priority for your company is “Celebrating The Everyday Family Moments That Matter Most”. We know that by helping the Family Place by donating some of your snacks you would be able to further that marketing campaign, and really make a difference in your community here in Cache Valley.
Problem
As a private 501(c) 3 nonprofit charitable organization, The Family Place survives on community donors and grants. We receive no consistent government aid. This leaves a constant need for supplies and resources from our community. We run a 24/7 nursery for parents who are in emergency situations, and for children who are taken from homes for various reasons. This leaves a major need for snacks for the children. These are typically children who come from rough backgrounds, or have recently experienced a traumatic situation. It is our mission to provide these children with a comfortable, safe place to feel loved and comforted. Because The Family Place does not receive regular government funding, there are questions regularly as to where we will get the necessary supplies to keep The Family Place successfully running. Receiving donations in the form of Pepperidge farms products would go a long way in helping these little ones feel comfortable in a new temporary home.
In addition to the need for snacks at The Family Place nursery, we know Pepperidge Farms recognizes the need and importance of reaching out to community groups. As a large business, having positive community relations goes a long way in contributing to the face of the company itself. Broadcasting gratitude and recognition to Pepperidge Farms on all social media platforms for the snacks provided. This social media recognition will give the community recognition and positive public image Pepperidge Farms desires.
Objective
Our objective is to provide the Family Place with sufficient snacks to feed the children the help and to be able to promote and advertize Pepperidge Farm as a community leader here in cache valley. The exchange will provide the Family Place and Pepperidge Farm with desired outcomes. The Family Place is a place where many families come and it would be a great place to advertise for Pepperidge Farm. This provides a great opportunity to Pepperidge Farm’s as their target audience would most likely be families. For the Family Place it provides snacks for the children.
Our proposal is that Pepperidge Farm provides various snacks of their choosing to the Family Place once a month. In exchange the Family Place will advertize that they are sponsored by Pepperidge Farm on social media and at their building. Our team will take care of writing a press release and the advertising for pepperidge farm. The Family Place will put a poster up at their building to thank Pepperidge Farm. Since the Family Place is a private non-profit organization they rely solely on donations. They have always done a great job in promoting and advertising for their donors. On facebook the Family Place has over 2000 followers assumably in the cache valley area, the target audience of the local Pepperidge Farm.
Budget
The family place nursery has an average of 500 visits to the nursery per month. A monthly donation of approximately 20 pounds of crackers and/or cookies would provide one snack serving for more than half of these visits. Individually wrapped snacks are preferred, but not necessary.
Timeline
The timeline for this exchange will start on January 5th, 2017 when Pepperidge Farm will provide the requested 20 pounds of crackers, cookies, or other baked goods.  At this time, The Family Place Nursery will begin integrating Pepperidge Farm into existing advertising campaigns.  The Family Place will also advertise the partnership at their location with banners and food packaging provided by Pepperidge Farm.
This pattern of exchange will repeat itself on the 5th of every month.  The contract is expected to last until December 5th, 2017.  At that time, the contract may be revisited to determine whether to continue or terminate the agreement for the following year between The Family Place and Pepperidge farm.
Conclusion
The Family Place would love to work with your company, together changing the lives of many children and families. By a generous donation of snacks from your company monthly, we will be able to run a functional facility that meets the needs of the many children and families we see. The Family Place looks forward to advertising your company, who we know has the same family values as us, to see significant positive changes in families through what each company can offer.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.

Social Media Case: Miracle Mattress Twin Towers Commercial

Studying public relations as my major has caused me to look at these situations from a PR perspective. This case is especially interesting to look at because of the tactics, or rather the lack of tactics, used to combat this major public relations crisis. Because Miracle Mattress is a one-location family owned company, it is easily assumed that there was little to no plan for a crisis situation like this one. The company was ripped apart on social media destroying the small reputation it might have held prior.

The ad was posted to the Miracle Mattress Facebook page by the star of the commercial, Charisse Bonanno, just a few days before the anniversary of 9/11. Charisse is the owner of Miracle Mattress’ daughter. Quickly after it’s initial post, it went viral. The American population was disgusted by the ad’s tasteless offensive nature.

The first statement from Mike Bonanno, owner of Miracle Mattress, came out on September 8 via Facebook. 7 short paragraphs in length, the statement offered a slight apology to those offended by the ad but the majority of the statement pleaded his ignorance in the matter. One part of the statement read, “the video was posted on Facebook without my knowledge or approval from our corporate office in Huston.” I found this to be a very bad move on his part. People don’t care that the CEO had no knowledge of this commercial. They are looking for a major apology and a way to make up for the hurt they have caused.

The second statement came out just a day later announcing the closing of Miracle Mattress. The first line read, “effective immediately, our Miracle Mattress store will be closed indefinitely.” The language used in this next statement would prove to cause even more of a backlash for the company once a later announcement was made of their plans to reopen.

The first two efforts to calm the outraged public over the distasteful commercial Miracle Mattress produced proved ineffective. I would almost argue that the efforts made to relieve the angry public only hurt the company further. However, in the last statement seemed to hit at least a few of the angry commenters. In the comments below the statement, people began taking sides. Tom Lewis commented on the September 16 statement and said, “you made a mistake, you owned up to it, you shut down over a holiday weekend, you’re donating to a good cause, you apologized to the local and greater community, and you’re training your staff. A truly appropriate response. Well done.” This is exactly what you hope to hear from an outraged public as a company that made a mistake.

The last aspect of this social media case I want to touch on is the tactful use of a Miracle Mattress supporter who lost her husband in the 9/11 attack. Lisa Patterson spoke to the press about the people responsible saying, “I know that you’re (Mike) a good man at heard, and that Charissse is a good person.” Using this widows statement is the smartest thing you can do in this situation. Using and reusing this statement will spark other to forgive and recognize the magnitude of the mistake, but the equal sincere apology for the mistake.

Overall I think Miracle Mattress could have done a better job from the beginning confronting the issue. It would have been wise for them to bring in a communications specialist to deal with an issue of this magnitude, which I do not believe they did. If they could have attacked the issue the way they did a couple weeks later in the first public statements, I think they would have avoided a lot of the backlash from people commenting on social media. You can read more about the efforts to combat this issue on the Miracle Mattress Facebook page here.

MEMO

To: CMST 3050 Employees

From: Sarah Keyes, CEO

Re: New Hire Welcome

Date: September 28, 2016

Hello everyone,

I wanted to send out a quick reminder that we have a new member, Erin Dimond, joining our team today. Please be inviting as we welcome her into our professional family. Below is some information I’ve put together on Erin so each of you know a little more about her background and interests.

Erin graduated from Star Valley High School in 2010. Upon graduation, Erin began school at Utah State University where she started began her involvement in the EEJ College of Education and Human Services. This semester she is taking a social media course from Doctor Preston Parker, and actively Tweeting about all things social media related. While attending USU Erin met her husband, Joshua Dimond. Joshua is from Grace Idaho and works at the Space Dynamics Laboratory.

One story most people don’t know about Erin is that her wedding dress was stolen on her wedding day. Someone broke into her car and took the dress from the passenger seat just shortly before she would be putting it on after being sealed in the LDS temple. You can read more about this crazy event here.

Erin is a lover of family and cute animals. Last year she spent her second Christmas in Star Valley, Wyoming with her family and husband, Joshua. Some of the animals Erin loves include panda bears, elephants, and baby giraffes. Be sure and say hi to Erin if you see get the chance to meet her today. Thanks everyone, have a great day!

Sincerely,

Sarah
